Lenten Penance
We’re now a few weeks into our Lenten journey. By now some of the initial gusto (if you had any to begin with) has worn off and you might be starting to try and remember why you’re doing any of this at all. It’s important to remember what fasting is all about.
The purpose of fasting is to say no to something good in order to be able to better and more healthily (is that a word?) say yes to it in the future. This is important, in Lent we fast from things that are good. If you are engaged in something that is not good, something sinful or evil, then the only appropriate fast in that case is not a Lenten Fast but a Permanent Fast!
We say no to good things, in order to reorient ourselves around the ultimate good, which is God. Good things can begin to occupy unhealthy spaces in our lives, and take us away from the Primary Good. So take the time to slow down and check on those things, in order to reset and reorient yourself around God and his Kingdom.
